Methodology

Every figure on this site comes from a dated source, primary where one exists. Melissa Blake reads each source herself, ranks it by reliability and marks anything she could not confirm.

How a Fact Reaches a Page

A fact starts on the site that owns it. Melissa Blake reads the terms, rules, help pages or counter where it appears, records the value with the date and the page address, and gives it one of six statuses. Only then does it go into the text, worded to match its status. A number that changes daily, such as a post count, carries its date in the sentence or in the table caption beside it.

Sources Ranked by Reliability

When two sources disagree, the one higher in this list wins, and the page says that they disagree.

SourceHow we use it
Site terms and rulesthe final word on what a site bans, from minors and real people to paywalled work
Help pages and counterssearch syntax, settings and post counts, each quoted with the date we read it
Laws and regulatorsstatutes on legislation.gov.uk and Cornell LII, Ofcom pages and court opinions
Encyclopedias and dictionariesthe history of the Rule 34 maxim, with every disagreement between them shown
Analytics and scannerstraffic estimates and security scans, always credited to the service and never stated as fact
User reportsreviews and downtime reports, quoted as testimony with the platform and the date

Press articles and fan wikis such as Fanlore fill gaps in site history, and the text names them each time.

Six Statuses and What They Do to the Text

  • Confirmed. We read the value on the site that owns it, as with the 537,617 posts tagged video on Rule34.xxx.
  • Operator claim. The text credits it to the site: "You can access 90% of Rule 34 without an account."
  • User testimony. The platform is always named, so downtime reports carry isitdownorjustme.net as their source.
  • Conflict. Both versions appear. Rule34.xxx's help page lists three ratings, while its FAQ says "there are no questionable posts."
  • Unconfirmed. A third-party figure we could not check at the source stays credited to that service, as when PCRisk and Gridinsoft date Rule34video's domain to December 23, 2018.
  • Not found or unavailable. We say what is missing. The options inside Rule34video's Duration filter, for example, do not appear in its page text.

Our Own Counts and Calculations

Several figures on the site are our own arithmetic on counters published by the sites. Video made up 3.3% of Rule34.xxx posts, 537,617 of 16,109,255, and the ai_generated tag covered 22.2% of all posts, or 3,570,819. Long clips are rare. Only about 1.2% of video posts carry longer_than_5_minutes, and the 6, 7, 8 and 9 minute tags together hold 1,227 posts, fewer than the 1,705 on longer_than_10_minutes. The mp4 and webm tags make 131,162 between them, about a quarter of video posts. Each calculation shows its inputs on the page where it appears.

How We Read Adult Sites

We read text pages only: terms, rules, FAQs, help and search pages, settings, and tag lists for neutral tags such as video, sound and longer_than_5_minutes. Homepages are read only for counters, menus and notices, and individual posts, galleries and video pages stay closed. Tags built around minors are never recorded or published. Each site's rule on minors is summarized from its terms, with the wording quoted where it matters.

What We Did Not Test

We created no accounts, uploaded nothing, bought no premium plan on Rule 34 World or rule34gen.video, and passed no age check. Video playback, download buttons and VPN behavior were not tested. Some pages failed to load for us, including Rule34video's DMCA page, Rule34Gen's FAQ and the rules page of r/rule34, and the text notes the gap wherever it affects a claim.

When Pages Are Rechecked

Pages are rechecked at least every 90 days, and sooner when a site changes its rules, prices or age checks. A reported and confirmed error gets fixed and then logged in our editorial policy by Melissa Blake, who is responsible for this method.
